Microscopic Characterization of Materials (KOO065)

7.5 credits, Advanced (Second Cycle)

The course is a continuation of Materials Analysis at the Nanoscale (KOO105) and focuses on hands-on exercises with the microscope. The students will plan and execute analysis of unknown materials. The aim of this course is to acquire knowledge on current methods of element analysis on a nanometer scale and to understand the processes behind these methods. Information about structure and chemical composition at microscopic level is necessary for development of new solid-state materials and their interaction with biological material. Different types of electron microscopes as well as spectrometers for element analysis is taught and used.
